Fixation Friday - Featuring Jan Graham

Hi all! Fixation Friday time again, and today we have Jan Graham joining us. She's giving us the inside scoop on life as she knows it. Enjoy!

You write a range of genres including contemporary, BDSM, ménage, romantic suspense and paranormal, which one do you like to write the most?

My favourite genre is romantic suspense, well for now anyway, lol. I like writing a complex story with lots of twists and turns along the way. I tend to combine genre’s so my currently published romantic suspense stories have ménage and BDSM elements to them but neither is the main thrust of the storyline, the suspense is. As for paranormal I do love to create worlds and I have taken down the original paranormal book I had on the market while I refine the series. Hopefully I’ll be back into writing paranormal by next year, of course it will have an element of suspense to it.

You openly admit to being a sub, what is the most common misconception about the lifestyle that you’ve experienced or heard?

I think the biggest misconception is that BDSM is based on abuse, where a Dom can treat a sub any way they like and the sub has no say in it. That’s so far from reality. Everything is negotiated and agreed upon, it’s consensual and either party can walk away at any time. Also, not all BDSM involves being caned or flogged, pain doesn’t have to be part of the dynamic, and in a lot of BDSM relationships it isn’t.

Which one of your characters was the hardest for you to write and why?

The hardest character for me to write was Rhia from Playing Jax. Rhia is an ex nun and a virgin. I went to Catholic school as a kid, so the nun bit didn’t really phase me, but it’s been a loooonnng time since I was a virgin, so figuring out how forward Rhia should be and a few other traits associated with losing your virginity made me think. I ended up turning her into a woman determined to have sex, one who decided if she was embracing a new life outside the church then she needed to go all the way, so to speak, lol.

What’s the worst/ best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

This is the best piece of advice I’ve ever received didn’t really have anything to do with the writing world but it helped me write nonetheless. I had difficulty getting back into writing after my hubby passed away so, one day a friend sat down with me after I’d been complaining how I couldn’t write anymore and didn’t know why, and she asked me a simple question - “Where is Shane in all this?” I didn’t get her at first, but after talking I realised that he’d been with me for the other books I’d written, I bounced ideas off him, let him read what I’d written etc. After he’d gone I removed all sign of him from my life, took down pictures and didn’t mention him, because I didn’t want to deal with the pain. My friend made me get a picture of him out of storage and I sat it on the desk in plain sight. After a few emotional days of staring at him I finally sat down to write and the words started to flow. I finished Switching Mercedes in record time and it remains one of my favourite works. I still have his picture in my work area.

What is the biggest challenge you’ve had to overcome so far in your writing career?

I think the biggest challenge has been finding a life/writing balance. Working from home, it’s so easy to give into interruptions. I can always find something else to do or somewhere else to go. I had to realise I needed to treat my writing like an everyday job, sit at the computer and work, schedule time off when needed but otherwise just say to family and friends “I can’t today, I’m working”. It’s the only way to get the job done.

What is something that a reader will find in your books that they won’t find in others?
I don’t know that I’m exclusive in this but I think readers will find an accurate portrayal of people in the BDSM lifestyle. They’ll also find a glimpse into the Aussie character. I mean I can’t write an Aussie hero or Dom without making him a bit of a larrikin.

Besides writing and reading, what are your favourite things to do?

I must admit that I have a Netflix addiction, so I do enjoy finding new series or movie to watch in my downtime. I also love going out with friends and just sitting, drinking coffee, and chatting. I do a little bit of jewellery making as well, but I’m not great at it…lol.

Tell us something about yourself that most people don’t know.

I hate being outside on really windy days, I find it hard to think and just want to go inside and hide.

If you could travel to anywhere in the world where would it be?

Probably New York. I’d love to go and see as many Broadway shows as possible.

Political rally or rock concert? Which would you choose?

A rock concert. Unless the political rally was something I felt passionate about and needed a groundswell of support.

Thank you for sharing with us today, Jan!

Jan's book, One Night in Sydney, is on sale at Amazon for 99 cents as part of the Tirgearr Publishing 5th birthday celebrations.
Check out the book below and go to Jan's blog post for more info on the birthday party. There are lots of prizes up for grabs.

Abigail Devon is all about business, until the dream of keeping her company alive fails and she finds herself seeking distraction in the arms of a tempting stranger she met on the plane. Kane Matheson is a man like no other, and once Abby gives into her attraction to him, passions spark and a night of erotic pleasure begins.

Kane can’t believe his luck when his flight to Sydney places Abby along his path to a fun filled weekend. She’s his kind of woman—business minded, clever, and with curves in all the right places. When he discovers they have more in common than savvy business expertise and undeniable sexual heat, he’s faced with a daunting choice, and left wondering if pleasure can win out over wise business sense in one of the most beautiful harbour side cities of the world.

Writing a bio that lets readers know who you are is tricky at times because I describe myself in so many ways. Like my books I fall into different genres, all of which depend on my mood and inspiration at the time. I am a writer, submissive, orphan, widow, sister, aunt, friend and sometimes, a wild child.

My writing currently falls under a variety of genres including BDSM, contemporary romance and romantic suspense but who knows where my literary future will lead. That’s going to be the next exciting chapter.

Fixation Friday - Featuring Em Denning

Hi readers! It's Fixation Friday again. Today I'm joined by romance/ erotica author, Em Denning. Her new release, Jazz Hands, is the third book in the hot and steamy Studio Collection.
Em answers some of my questions about her writing and life in general.
Enjoy!

Your Studio Collection is a series of short, steamy romances, focusing on dance. Did you draw on dance experience of your own when conceiving these stories?

Oh goodness no. I have two left feet and a tendency to twist my ankle, so dancing is not something I do. I think dancing is supremely sexy and it’s been a really great inspiration for this series.

Which authors influenced your love of suspense?

Dean Koontz. My mom let me read one of his books when I was eleven. It took a lot of persuasion for her to let me, but I read one, then one more, then one more and I’ve never looked back.

John Saul was also a pretty good influence on me, but Koontz made me want to be an author.

What is one genre that you’d never write?

Paranormal Romance. I’m not that big into Vampires and Shifters and all the other supernatural creature romances. I don’t like to say that I’d never do something, but it’s the genre that I’m least likely to write.

How has being a published author changed your life?

It hasn’t really. I still do the same things I did before. It’s made me a little more organized if anything.

Have you ever based a character on a real person?

Not directly, no, but I think sometimes different characteristics from different people inspire little parts of my characters.

What’s the one book that you’ve read that you’ll always remember and read repeatedly?

I have a few books that I read repeatedly actually, so I can’t name just one. I read Anne of Green Gables about once a year. The same goes for Ugly Love by Colleen Hoover, The Beyond Series by Kit Rocha, though not the full series, I have my favorites. A recent addition to my re-read list is The Divine Trilogy by RE Hargrave.

Happy endings—yes or not always?

I prefer happy endings, but if the author goes a different way I’m okay with that. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t, it’s definitely a risk.

All of my books have happy endings. I’m not sure I could write a book that didn’t end happily. My inner hopeless romantic would not allow it, I’m sure.

Besides writing and reading, what are your favourite things to do?

…you can do other things?

I’m not very good at anything else, but I do like to play my guitar once in a while and sometimes I dabble in art. But reading and writing is my passion.

Tell us something about yourself that most people don’t know.

I don’t like shellfish

If you could travel to anywhere in the world where would it be?

Definitely Scotland and Ireland. Toss in a quick trip to Greece and Italy and I’m a happy woman.

Thanks Em!
Get your free copy of At the Barre in the Valentine's Giveaway happening until Sunday. Check out the feature post on the side bar for the links.
A short erotic romance story. Heat level: grab a fan.

Kevin promised his sister to walk her down the aisle at her wedding. This wouldn’t be so bad, but she’s also making him dance with her. There’s only one problem—Kevin can’t dance.

Determined to have the perfect day, Kevin’s sister signs him up for dancing lessons. His instructor, Ginger, thinks he bit off more than he could chew and offers him some private instruction after class. As his sister’s wedding approaches and his lessons come to an end, he soon learns the benefit of following Ginger’s lead.

Allison goes looking for a ballet instructor—can Josh dance his way into her heart? AT THE BARRE is a short erotic romance story. Heat level: grab a fan.

Allison Elliot was too short to be a ballerina—according to the studio that turned her away. Determined to pursue her childhood dream of learning ballet, she signs up for lessons at a different studio and quickly catches the attention of her instructor.

Josh Owen is more than happy to be her teacher, and maybe more if she’d let him, but she doesn’t seem to notice his advances. Is she oblivious to the obvious chemistry between them, or is something more going on? When Allison threatens to drop his class, Josh urges her to reconsider. Will she stay, or will she give up on two dreams—ballet and love?

Is commitment-phobic Katrina Hoffman ready to partner up for good? JAZZ HANDS is a short erotic romance story. Heat level: crank up the AC and put the fan on high.

Katrina Hoffman can dance, but doesn’t. She hasn’t in years. But something is missing from her life right now, and she decides that one trip around the dance floor can’t hurt. When her first time on a dance floor in years thrusts her into the arms of a man who is practically her boss, Katrina’s pulse starts to race. At the office, Eugene is stern, dressed in suits and all business. Here, he’s relaxed and smiling, and the feel of his body against hers sends her head spinning.

Eugene has carried a torch for Katrina since the first day she waltzed into work. He wanted her before, but now that he’s felt her skin against his, her hands on his body, he needs to have her.

But when he does, will his confession send her running, or is the commitment-phobic dancer ready for something more?

E.M. Denning is a writer from British Columbia. She loves her family and animals, and anything cute and fuzzy. She was born a hopeless romantic, and when she’s not writing romance, she’s probably reading it. She loves love.

You can find her on her website, Facebook or on her blog.

Interview with Chelsea from Finding Home

Hi there. So, while I was writing Finding Home I sat down with Chelsea to talk about life, only to have some uninvited guests hijack the interview.
Have a read!

Interview with Chelsea © J.M. Adele, 2017.

Chelsea:
*Sweeps into the restaurant looking gorgeous*
Mornin’. Isn’t it a beautiful day?

Jen:
Yes, it is.

Chelsea:
Can I get you anything? Coffee? Sweet tea? Tequila?
*Winks and waves to Beau who’s manning the bar*

Jen:
*nods*
Just a water, thanks.

Chelsea:
Oh, you’re an adventurous one. One water comin’ right up.
*Comes back with a water for Jen and a sweet tea for herself after talking to several people*
Here ya go. I love your dress, by the way.
*places drinks on the table and hands Jen a napkin*

Jen:
Thank you.

Chelsea:
So, where do we start?
*Takes a sip of her drink*

Jen:
Why don’t we start with Boston? How do you like living here?

Chelsea:
Oh, I love it. I have this awful yearnin’ for home, but this place has opened up so many opportunities for me. I can’t be thankful enough.

Jen:
What about Alabama? Do you plan on going back there some day?

Chelsea:
*Looks towards the door to the kitchen*
A few weeks ago, I would have said yes, absolutely. Now, I’m not so sure.

Jen:
What’s changed your mind? Or should I say who’s changed your mind?

Chelsea:
*Fiddles with the tablecloth*

Dane:
*Plonks into the chair beside Chelsea*
Aw, has my girl gone all shy?

Chelsea:
Butt out Dane.
*shakes head*
He’s such a spotlight whore.

Dane:
The answer to your question is definitely a who, and his name is Greyson. Do you want me to go and get him?

Chelsea:
*Sits up straight*
What!? No, Dane.

Jen:
That’d be great, thanks.

Chelsea:
*Scowls at Dane’s retreating back*
I should’ve specified the subjects that were off limits. Greyson is one of them.

Jen:
Why?

Chelsea:
*throws hands in the air*
Didn’t I just say I wouldn’t talk about him?

Jen:
Okay, then. How has it been moving into a share house?

Chelsea:
The girls are great. I’m not so sure about Ryan.

Jen:
Why?

Chelsea:
He can be a jerk sometimes.

Jen:
You don’t want to talk about him either, do you?

Chelsea:
Can we just not talk about men, in general?
*Eyes the door to the kitchen again*

Jen:
Done. So, what’s your greatest fear?

Chelsea:
Being in a position where I am dependent on a man.

Jen:
*Raises eyebrows*
Are we still talking about men?

Chelsea:
You asked.
*shrugs*

Dane:
*Sneaks up behind Chelsea*
Chelsea loves talking about men. It’s one of our favourite subjects.

Chelsea:
*Whips around in her chair*
Sweet Jesus, Dane! Would you go and look after the customers?

Dane:
Jenna’s got it all under control. We only have two parties left.
*claps hands and takes a seat*
So... men. Please continue.

Jen:
Chelsea was explaining how her greatest fear is being dependent on a man. I’m not sure whether she was referring to money or affection.

Chelsea:
Both.

Dane:
Truth is she crav—

Chelsea:
Shut your cake hole, Dane.
*Slaps a hand on the table*

Greyson:
Uh, is this a bad time to introduce myself?

Dane:
*Jumps up to pull out a chair*
Perfect timing.

Chelsea:
Unbelievable! Do you see why I don’t want to talk about them?
*Waves a finger between Dane and Greyson*
This was supposed to be my interview.

Dane:
*Ignores Chelsea*
Jen, this is Greyson. Leading candidate for hottest chef in Boston and next in line to be Chelsea’s significant other.

Chelsea:
*coughs*

Greyson:
*snickers*

Jen:
Extremely pleased to meet you.
*Shakes Greyson’s hand*

Greyson:
Likewise. Don’t let me interrupt you.
*Smiles at Jen then fixes his stare on Chelsea*

Jen:
*Clears throat and squirms in seat*
If you only achieve one thing in life what would you want it to be?

Chelsea:
*Fixes gaze on the glass ceiling*
For my family and friends to know how much I love them.

Jen:
Do you feel that you’ve already achieved that?

Chelsea:
*Chews on lips*
I think so.
*Flicks a sideways look at Greyson who is still staring at her*

Jen:
Can I ask you a question, Greyson?

Greyson:
Call me Grey, and yes, you can.

Jen:
What is your biggest fear?

Grey:
Being trapped in a life I don’t want.

Chelsea:
Like what?

Grey:
Small town, farm life.

Chelsea:
*drops eyes to the table, fiddling with the cloth again*

Jen:
And what is the one thing you’d like to achieve most in life?

Greyson:
Ownership of my own successful restaurant and acclaim as a top chef in the industry.

Chelsea:
Would you mind if we did this another time, Jen? I’m not feeling so great all of a sudden.

Jen:
Of course, no problem. Can I get anything for you?

Chelsea:
No, I’ll be fine. I’ll call you.
*leaves*

Greyson:
*scrapes his chair as he darts after Chelsea*

Dane:
Well, you managed to pick at their sore spots. Well done. Love is so complicated. Thank goodness I don’t have to worry about that.
*grins*
Would you like to interview me?

Jen:
*laughs*
I’m all good, thanks Dane.
